Thermo Fisher Scientific
Eindhoven, Netherlands
Sr Intern - Ptychography
Announcement date: 20 December 2024Description
We are looking for someone to help with the implementation of ptychography. This is a computational imaging technique that uses a large series of electron diffraction patterns to retrieve the electrostatic potential of the sample, even down to atomic resolution, and promises better results with simpler hardware and less electron damage to the sample.
In this position we focus on developing further the reconstruction algorithm, and validate it with experimental datasets recorded on state-of-the-art electron microscopes. Your insights from theory will guide the experimental setup, and experimental limits will have to be accounted for in the algorithm.
Requirements
This topic marries intimate knowledge of wave optics and dynamical electron scattering in solids with advanced numerical optimization techniques. As such a strong background in physics and mathematics is required, as is knowledge of software development in Python. A prior acquaintance with electron microscopy is positive, but not strictly necessary.

Post-doc : Interaction of helium plasmas with tungsten surfaces in the context of controlled thermonuclear fusion
Announcement date: 22 November 2024 - Deadline for application: 22 November 2025Description
The evolution of the tungsten microstructure and properties under helium irradiation could cause problems for both operational and safety reasons in fusion reactors. In particular, the presence of helium bubbles, formed mainly in the subsurface area, modifies the mechanical and retention properties of radioactive elements.
The aim of the proposed experimental work is to study the properties of tungsten under He irradiation and, more specifically, to quantify the Helium trapped in nano-bubbles formed. The first stages in the formation of He bubbles in the W, their dynamics and evolution under the effect of thermal cycles will be analyzed at micro- and nanometric scales. Experimental techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM, STEM/EELS, electron tomography), atomic force microscopy, optical measurements as well as plasma implantation experiments will be implemented by the candidate.
Requirements
Solid knowledge of materials characterization. Extensive (practical) experience in TEM characterization is essential. Knowledge of nuclear fusion, and/or solid state physics, and/or plasma physics would be appreciated too.
